Teen Counseling for When Life Gets Overwhelming

The teen years bring huge changes, and sometimes the stress shows up in ways that feel confusing or alarming. You might notice:

Your teen spending hours in their room, barely talking, or giving you the constant “I’m fine.”

Low mood or sadness, changes in energy, loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, or a heaviness you can’t quite name.

Feeling like you’re walking on eggshells, unsure what to say or how to help without making things worse.

Explosive reactions such as arguments that escalate quickly, irritability over small things, or risk-taking that feels out of control.

Feeling worries about your son or daughter's emotional, social, or mental health development, and noticing signs of struggle

Hidden anxiety that manifests as dread before school, perfectionism that’s never satisfied, or worries that keep them up at night.

None of this means there is something “wrong” with your teen. It means they’re overwhelmed and need tools to manage big feelings, communicate better, and feel supported at home.

Experience the Best Version of Your Teen, Ever

Most families begin to notice positive changes within the first months of counseling. Using evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT skills, and family support, we help your teen:

  • Open up more easily instead of shutting down or bottling emotions

  • Handle stress with healthier tools instead of lashing out or avoiding problems

  • Build self-confidence and start believing in their own strengths

  • Communicate better at home so conversations don’t always turn into arguments

  • Reconnect with friends, school, and daily life in ways that feel more balanced

Parents often tell us they feel relief, too. That often feels like less tension at home, more trust in their teen, and greater hope for the future.

Discover How Teen Counseling Helps Your Teen Feel Better

Most parents see their teen begin to shift within the first several sessions. Counseling works because it gives teens structure, accountability, and the right tools to handle life’s challenges. Our therapists help your teen:

Learn practical coping skills they can use at school, at home, or with friends when emotions feel overwhelming

Practice destress techniques that calm racing thoughts and help regulate mood in the moment

Build accountability by setting goals with their therapist and following through week by week

Process emotions safely instead of shutting down, bottling feelings, or acting out in harmful ways

Gain psychoeducation about how the brain and body respond to stress, giving teens insight and language for what they’re experiencing

Strengthen support systems by improving communication and trust with parents and caregivers

Develop resilience for navigating identity, relationships, academics, and the everyday ups and downs of adolescence

Our approach is practical, compassionate, and focused on creating lasting change.

Quick Note About Insurance and Payments

Our practice does not currently work with insurers. All prices listed above are for cash/debit/credit payments. If you’d like, we can provide a “superbill” to you so you can ask your insurer for partial reimbursement. This is dependent upon your “out-of-network” benefits, and we will take the time to explain this to you well during our intake session.

We also accept FSA/HSA funds as payment. We’ll help you set this up before our first full session. Simply mention it, and our team will get the process going on it.

Teen Therapy FAQs

Does my teen need counseling?

If your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, mood swings, low self-esteem, or social and family conflict, counseling can provide relief. Many parents seek support when they notice changes in behavior, withdrawal, or stress that doesn’t seem to improve on its own.

What type of therapy is best for teenagers?

Our therapists use evidence-based approaches such as CBT, DBT skills, EMDR, Brainspotting, and mindfulness. We tailor the approach to your teen’s unique needs, blending talk therapy with practical coping tools so they feel better both in and outside of sessions.

Does your team have experience treating teen anxiety, depression, trauma, and more?

Yes. Our therapists specialize in supporting teens ages 11–19 with challenges like anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, performance pressure, and identity struggles. Each of our clinicians brings advanced training and years of experience working specifically with adolescents.

How soon will I see improvements in my teen's mood and behavior?

Many families notice changes within the first several sessions. Some teens feel relief quickly once they begin talking, while others may take more time to open up. Our structured, supportive process helps create steady progress you can see at home.

Is medication part of the plan?

No. Counseling at Elite Teen Counseling focuses on therapy, not medication. If medication might be helpful, we can collaborate with your teen’s physician or psychiatrist, but it’s never a requirement to begin or continue therapy.

We’ve tried teen counseling before. Why is this different?

What sets us apart is our exclusive focus on teens and the supporting family structure. From our tailored approach, to therapists who truly understand adolescent development, to our balance of accountability and compassion, we meet your teen where they are. Our style isn’t stiff or clinical; it’s relatable, supportive, and designed to build trust and be effective.

Can I do this if I don’t live in Sacramento?

Yes. In addition to in-person sessions at our Sacramento-area office, we offer secure online counseling for teens anywhere in California.

How much does teen counseling cost?

Session rates vary by therapist and start at $150 per session. You’ll always know costs upfront, and we’ll match you with the therapist who best fits your teen’s needs, personality, and your family’s budget.

Do you take insurance as payment?

We are an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. However, we can provide you with a superbill to submit for potential partial reimbursement, depending on your plan’s benefits. We also accept HSA/FSA cards.

How do I get my teen started in teen counseling?

Every family begins with a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation. During this call, we’ll learn more about your teen, answer your questions, and determine if we’re the right fit. If we aren’t, we’ll refer you to a trusted colleague. If we are, we’ll schedule your first session.
